Almost got a heart attack last night. It has been a while since I last updated my computer, so I decided to finally get it over with. Just to make sure I made a system restore point and looked up how to restore the system from the command line, in case something went wrong. Okay, so I downloaded and installed a whole list of patches, security updates and bugfixes. Computer still worked fine after that, and then I decided to install Windows Service Pack 2.
Installation went fine, but when I restarted the computer things didn't look so fine. Windows refused to start up. The loading screen appeared, but then the computer just rebooted. Fine, no need to panic yet, just start with the command prompt and perform a system restore. And that's where the heart attack almost kicked in. It didn't work! I simply couldn't restore the system!
Only one solution: reinstalling everything. Good thing I keep my documents on a separate harddrive! Took me a few hours to get everything up and running again, and now everything works fine again. Guess I won't be trying to install Service Pack 2 again any time soon!
