On the internet, you are not exactly anonymous. Your computer is broadcasting an IP address all the time, along with information about your location and ISP. Your ISP has all information about every email you sent, every website you visited and every file you downloaded. In most countries, they are required by law to do so and to keep this information for a few years. This means that if someone has your IP address, they can obtain all information about your online behaviour for the last couple of years!
It's easy to prevents such things from happening, though, with hide IP address software.
